In a sintering or heat treating process for Be and for metals of Group 1V, V and V1 of the Periodic Table sucha as Ti, Zr, V, N6, Ta, and their alloys the sintering or heat treatment is carried out in a vacuum of 10 to 10-3mm. Hg in the presence of a powdered oxide or oxides such as Al2O3, ZrO2, CaO, MgO, SiO2, Cr2O3 and TiO2 which have a free enthalpy of reaction with 1 mol of oxygen not more positive than -100 K cal. The green compacts of metal powder e.g. Ti of 400-500 h or Ti <60m or Ti-Zr alloy <60m or the fabricated metal parts e.g. b Ti alloy containing 13% V, 11% Cr, 3% Al, are preferably embedded in the oxide material which has a grain size of 5-500m . In the examples Ti is sintered at 1200 DEG C. at 0.5-1 mm., the Ti/Zr alloy at 1250 DEG C. at 8 x 10-2 mms., V at 1300 DEG C. at 10-2 mms. and the b Ti alloy is heat treated by solution treatment in air at 800 DEG C. followed by ageing at 500 DEG C in CaO at 10-1 mm. |
