PURPOSE:To obtain the title emulsifier which can give a polymer emulsion of good foam separation and can give a film excellent in water resistance, transparency, smoothness, etc., by forming it from a betaine ester of a polyoxyalkylene group-containing ether compound. CONSTITUTION:At least one betaine ester selected fro among those of a polyoxyalkylene dialkylphenyl ether (A) of formula I (wherein R1, R2, R3, R4, R5, R6 and R7 are each alkyl or the like, l is 1-30 and X is an anion), a polyoxyalkylene phenyl ether having a plurality of benzene nuclei (B) of formula II (wherein R8 is alkyl or H and Y is formla III, IV or the like) and a polyoxyalkylene polyalcohol ether (C) of formula I (wherein formula VI is a polyalcohol residue, m is 8-20 and p is 2-5) is prepared. This betaine ester is used as an emulsifier for emulsion polymerization.
