PURPOSE:To produce aluminum nitride powder having low carbon content, by filling metallic Al powder in a thin-walled Al container and heating and nitriding a non-oxidizing atmosphere. CONSTITUTION:Metallic Al powder is filled in a thin-walled Al container at a bulk density of <=1.5 and heated at about <=1,400 deg.C in a non-oxidizing atmosphere such as nitrogen gas for about 5hr to nitride the Al. The obtained aluminum nitride ingot is crushed to powder. The metallic Al powder used as a starting material of the present process is preferably atomized powder having particle diameter of about <=250mum. Aluminum nitride powder having a carbon content of <=0.03wt% can be produced by the process.
