PURPOSE:The reaction of diphenyl ether with iodine in the presence of a specific amount of nitric acid gives the title compound of high purity, which is readily purified through simple operations, and is used as a starting material for an amino compound used in fiber and resin production. CONSTITUTION:The reaction of diphenyl ether with iodine or an iodine com pound is carried out in the presence of more than 0.5, preferably more than equivalent amount of nitric acid based on the molecular iodine to give the objective compound, preferably 4-iodo- or 4,4'-diiododiphenyl ether. As the iodine compound, sodium, potassium or ammonium iodide, quaternary ammonium iodide and tertiary amine hydroiodide, are cited. EFFECT:The process according to the present invention is very advantageous, because complicated purification process such as separation of isomers is not necessary. USE:A starting material for carboxylic acid, ester or alcohol foar resins and synthetic fibers. |
