<p>CONVERTIBLE RAIL-HIGHWAY SEMI-TRAILER WITH SPREAD HIGHWAY TANDEM AXLE UNITS A convertible rail-highway semi-trailer carrying highway running gear axle units with rubber tired wheels, the axles being usually two in number, and a railway running gear axle unit with flanged wheels with means to alternately raise and lower the highway and railway axle units for selective use in highway and railroad travel modes. The highway axle units are spread apart with one of them mounted to the underframe closely adjacent the rear of the body, the railway axle unit being mounted to the underframe forward thereof and the second highway axle unit mounted to the underframe in front of the railway axle unit to permit greater loads to be carried on the highway axles for compliance with various State laws, to allow for greater payloads and to minimize potential damage to the rail wheels.</p> |
