A fluid-operated press 1 comprising fixed and movable platens 3, 5 and a double-acting cylinder 29, is suspended from a carrier 9 by suspension means including means 13 for varying the distance between the press 1 and the carrier 9 in response to the load carried by the suspension means. The invention is applied to a press for use in nailing together parts of wood trusses and may be hydraulically or pneumatically operated. The carrier 9 is mounted on wheels 43 freely running on a rail 15 which is itself supported at its ends by two spaced parallel beams (not shown). Rail 15 is preferably driven along these beams by a fluid motor (45), Fig. 3 (not shown). The press-suspending means includes two mutually perpendicular pivot connections 47, 55 and a single-acting cylinder 49, piston (51) and pistonrod 53. Fluid pressure in cylinder 49 is arranged to nearly balance the weight of the press 1. Thus when the press is used for driving nailing plates (N1), N2 into pieces of timber (T1), T2, the press is automatically adjusted so that the platens 3, 5 drive the upper and lower nailing plates in simultaneously. A motor 65 drives a pair of variable displacement pressure-compensated pumps (67, 69) for supplying hydraulic fluid to the cylinders 29, 49 and to the motor (45).
