PURPOSE:To obtain a satisfactory image in which both right and left pages are the same quality when a book-shaped original is read by making different the scanning direction of an image to the left page of the original and the scanning direction of an image to the right page of the original. CONSTITUTION:On an image reader 2, an original platen 3 is provided and at the right side of the original platen 3, a level difference 3a is provided. On the reader 2, switches 8, 9, 10 and 13, LED 11 and 12 and a left edge margin setting switch 14 are provided. For the image information of an original 1, the picture element is dissolved by a CCD 18 and the information is outputted as an electric signal in accordance with the density of respective picture elements. It is judged whether the present page is a left page or not, and at the time of the left page, the reading in the normal direction is executed. On the other hand, when the present page is the right page, the reading of the reverse direction is executed. When the page is fixed, the reading of respective directions is executed to complete the reading. When the page is not fixed, right or left page LED 11 and 12 light up to complete the reading.
