PURPOSE:To eliminate the deterioration of a display grade such as fluctuation of a display by pressing or interference color by dispersing soft and hard gap controlling agents into the cell of an electrooptic element. CONSTITUTION:Transparent electrodes 1 and oriented films 3 having respectively prescribed shapes are formed on two sheets of PE terephthalate substrates 1. The films are subjected to an orientation treatment. A sealing frame by a silicone sealant is printed on one substrate and conductive paste is printed on another substrate. The soft gap controlling agents 6 and the hard gap controlling agents 7 are incorporated into an alcohol soln. at 1:1 ratio by weight and are so disposed therein than the density thereof is made 10-100 pieces/mm<2> on the substrates by a dipping method. The substrates are thereafter superposed and while the substrates are uniformly pressurized over the entire surface, the substrates are calcined for one hour at 120 deg.C to obtain a cell. The grain size of the soft gap controlling agent 6 is preferably made <=2 times the average grain size of the hard gap controlling agents 7. Said agents are exemplified by thermoplastic resins consisting of a polyimide, epoxy, etc. On the other hand, the hard gap controlling agents 7 are exemplified by glass beads, glass fibers, etc.
