PURPOSE:To improve the operability without increasing number of shift keys by adopting different shift function comprising plural shift keys depending on the result of the selection of input mode. CONSTITUTION:The character processing unit consists of an input mode changeover means 1 commanding the changeover of the input mode, an input mode register 2 storing the input mode commanded by the means 1, a shift key 3 commanding the changeover of the shift mode, a shift mode deciding means 4, a shift mode register 5, an encoder 7 generating a key code and its register 8. The shift key 3 shifts keys of the keyboard so as to make the shift function different depending on the result of selection of the input mode. For example, the same key is used as a permanent shift key or a temporary shift key depending on the change over of the input mode. As a result, the character processing unit with excellent operability is realized without increasing number of the shift keys.
