PURPOSE:To feed a printing medium at a constantly fixed pitch to enhance printing accuracy and ensure that the printing medium can be easily taken out on the occurrence of a power interruption under the condition where the printing medium is present in the titled device, by providing a sensor for the printing medium and separating rollers for clamping the printing medium therebetween from each other in response to a medium detection signal from the sensor. CONSTITUTION:When the leading end of a printing medium 11 is passed between upper and lower rollers 19, 20 of a roller-type feeding mechanism 4, energization of a solenoid 51 is stopped by a medium detection signal from a sensor 50, and a solenoid 58 is energized. The upper roller 19, 24 in the roller-type feeding mechanism 4, 5 is preliminarily separated from the lower roller 20, 25, and is returned to a lower position when the medium 11 reaches the position between the upper and lower rollers. Therefore, when a thicker medium is clamped between the upper and lower rollers, the rollers are not vibrated, and the feeding pitch for the printing medium is prevented from becoming irregular, where by the printing accuracy is enhanced. When a power interruption occurs under the condition where the printing medium 11 is present in the feeder, the medium can be easily taken out to the exterior by externally and manually turning either one of the rollers.
