PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as a raw material or modifying agent for polyester, polyurethane, etc., in high yield and purity in a short time, by condensing hydroxypivalic aldehyde in the presence of an acetonato metal salt compound. CONSTITUTION:Hydroxypivalic aldehyde is reacted in the presence of an acetonato metal salt compound (compound of group III-VIII transition metals of the periodic table) at 60-180 deg.C, preferably 90-150 deg.C for 5-90min to afford the aimed compound. Examples of the acetonato metal salt compound include acetylacetonato metal salt compounds, fluoroacetonato metal salt compounds, benzoylacetonato metal salt compounds, etc. The amount thereof to be used is within the range of 0.005-0.3wt%, preferably 0.01-0.1wt% based on the hydroxypivalic aldehyde.
