PURPOSE:To purify the titled compound with high catalyst activity without side reaction and loss, by selectively hydrogenating and removing a pheny lacetylene contained in a styrene-containing material in the presence of a cata lyst obtained by combination of specific components. CONSTITUTION:A phenylacetylene contained in a styrene-containing material is selectively hydrogenated and removed in the presence of a catalyst containing one or two or more metals selected from the group consisting of Pd, Pt, Ir, Rh and Ru and one or two or more elements selected from the group consisting of Cu, Ag, and Au as a hydrogenation catalyst (such catalyst components are normally supported on a suitable carrier and the amounts thereof are 0.01-1.0wt%, preferably 0.05-0.5wt% metals of the former component and 0.001-0.1wt%, preferably 0.005-0.05wt% elements of the latter component) to purify the styrene-containing material. The reaction temperature is <=200 deg.C, preferably 100 deg.C - room temperature.
