PURPOSE:To obtain a compound useful as a raw material for producing urethane, drugs, agricultural chemicals, etc., in high concentration and high yield, by reacting a primary amine with a diaryl carbonate while selectively separating and removing a formed aryl alcohol or isocyanate. CONSTITUTION:A primary amine is reacted with a diaryl carbonate at 100-300 deg.C, preferably 150-300 deg.C for 0.1-30hr while selectively separating and removing an aryl alcohol or isocyanate as a reaction product to the outside of the system by distillation method to give the aimed substance. The amount of the diaryl carbonate used in the reaction is 1.5-20mol based on the amino group contained in the primary amine. The boiling point of isocyanate is 50 deg.C higher than that of the arlyl alcohol and 10 deg.C lower than that of the diaryl carbonate or the boiling point of the diaryl alcohol is 50 deg.C higher than that of isocyanate and 10 deg.C lower than that of the diaryl carbonate. The diaryl carbonate is preferably used.
