A polymer of a mono-olefin is depolymerized by mixing the powdered, cold-compacted, sintered or molten polymer with a free-radical-producing compound selected from organic peroxides, azo compounds, and per acids or salts thereof, and then heating the mixture at above the decomposit on temperature of the free-radical-forming compound. In examples, di-t-butyl peroxide, lauryl peroxide, benzoyl peroxide, potassium persulphate and azodiisobutyric dinitrile are used as free-radical compounds. Optional features are: depolymerization in stages, the use of catalysts such as ferrous sulphate, and the addition of stabilizers (e.g. dilauryl thiodipropionate, calcium stearate, 2,6 - di - t - butyl - 4 - methylphenol or N-stearoyl-p-aminophenol). |
