The present invention relates to a device in which a sender may send large quantities or batches of mail. The sender 16 possesses a security accounting unit, similar to a franking apparatus, in which a franking value is placed by a central station 14 which also communicates with a remote reloading centre in order to take into account funds transferred to the accounting unit. The central station communicates with the sending station in such a way as to obtain data relating to the processing of the mail every time that the funds have to be transferred to the accounting unit.
