PURPOSE:To obtain coke for use in a blast furnace which is excellent in quality and productivity, by providing a residence chamber for produced coke connected to an indirect heating vertical continuous dry distillation oven where the quality of the produced coke can be improved. CONSTITUTION:Coal 1 is pulverized with a pulverizer 2 to prepare pulverized coal and is preheated at 100-400 deg.C in an airborne preheating dryer 3. An indirect heating vertical continuous dry distillation oven 5 provided with a coking chamber having an oven width of 130-250mm is charged with the pulverized coal through a storage pin 4, where the pulverized coal is dry distilled at 800-900 deg.C. The coke thus dry distilled is brought into contact in a coke residence chamber 6 for 30-60min with a dry distillation production fluid comprised of a gas such as a COG and a liquid such as tar which has been produced in the course of the coke dry distillation, thereby improving anti-reacting properties against CO2. The coke is heated at 1,000-1,200 deg.C in a shaft oven 8 of the direct gas heating type and then taken out as a coke product 9, while the dry distillation production fluid is discharged from a discharging passage 7.
