A process for the reduction of iron ores with the simultaneous production of synthesis gases or combustion gases consists in injecting a quantity of oxygen into ferro-coke and/or low-temperature carbonization iron briquettes in an upper combustion and low-temperature carbonization zone until a temperature of about 900 - 1000 DEG C is attained, and in feeding the gases thus produced through an underlying reduction zone, in which the CO2 produced in the known manner is reduced to CO by portions of the excess carbon, said CO in turn subjecting the iron ore to an indirect reduction. In the boundary region between the reduction zone and the underlying melt zone a further quantity of oxygen raises the temperature to at least 1600 DEG C and the temperature is controlled by the addition of steam and/or CO2, so that a) at this high temperature both the reduced iron and the slag become liquid and drop downward, whereby the slag, as known, floats on the heavier iron and in this way protects the iron from re-oxidation; b) the CO2 formed is fully dissociated into CO with the remaining carbon, and the reaction gas which is formed, consisting mainly of CO and smaller quantities of H2, is removed, while the carbonized pig iron and slag are sporadically removed.
