PURPOSE:To obtain a material having good transparency and high elasticity without rupturing against large deformation by constituting an optical material of a composite polysiloxane/silica body formed by mixing silica with polysiloxane. CONSTITUTION:This optical material consists of the composite polysiloxane/ silica body formed by mixing the silica which provides high mechanical strength to the polysiloxane with the polysiloxane having excellent optical characteristics such as transparency and high elasticity. More specifically, an elastic material 1-1 having the large modulus for which the mechanical strength is required because of the stress concn. to be generated therein is formed of the optical material consisting of the composite polysiloxane/silica material and the elastic material 1-2 which is required to be easily deformable rather than to be strong and has the small modulus of elasticity is formed of the optical material consisting of the polysiloxane alone. Then, not only the variable focus optical element which excels not only in the durability but the optical characteristics as well is thus obtd.
