PURPOSE:To produce polyphenyls by thermally decomposing a monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, to obtain terphenyl efficiently, by adding a biphenyl to the raw material. CONSTITUTION:In producing polyphenyls such as biphenyl, terphenyl, quaterphenyl, alkyl-substituted polyphenyl, etc., by thermally decomposing a monocyclic hydrocarbon such as benzene, toluene, xylene, etc., usually at about 600-950 deg.C in a vaporized state, preferably 0.5-10wt%, especially 1-4wt% based on the raw material of a biphenyl is added to the raw material and the thermal decomposition reaction is carried out so that concentration of terphenyl in the formed polyphenyls is simply raised. |
