NEW MATERIAL:The nitrogen-containing compound of formula I (R is 1-10C alkyl or alkoxy; A is -CH2CH2- or single bond; X and Y are F or Cl). EXAMPLE:2-[beta-(3,4-Difluorophenyl)ethyl]-5-n-pentylpyridine. USE:Useful as a component of liquid crystal composition. It has excellent compatibility with other liquid crystal compound or liquid crystal composition and high chemical stability. Viscosity of a liquid crystal composition can be remarkably decreased by the addition of said compound and the driving voltage of a liquid crystal display element can be lowered by the use of the liquid crystal composition. PREPARATION:For example, a compound of formula I wherein A is CH2CH2 can be produced according to the reaction formula by carrying out the dehydrative condensation of the 5-substituted-2-picoline of formula II with the 3,4-disubstituted benzaldehyde of formula III and reducing the resultant compound of formula IV in the presence of a proper catalyst such as palladium carbon.
