The invention relates to a method and an appliance for the preferably automatic calibration of chemical sensors in analytical measurement technology, for example O2, CO2 or chlorine sensors in liquids or gases. It is proposed to carry out the calibration in such a way, that the sensor immersed in the medium to be measured is left therein without any changes and that a wall structure, preferably adjoining in the form of a bell and surrounding the sensor, is supplied with the calibration medium, for example ambient air, via a pressure-generating device and that temperature and pressure sensors provide readings of ambient parameters, by means of which the actual concentration in the calibration medium of the respective gas to be measured can be determined by comparison with tables or stored values and the calibration of the output value supplied by the sensor can be performed accordingly.
