PURPOSE:To obtain fine grain-shaped manganese oxide having excellent performance as a manganese source of a soft magnetic material by blowing oxygen on the surface of metallic manganese or manganese iron alloy being a melted state or into the melted metal. CONSTITUTION:Manganese iron ally such as ferromanganese or metallic manganese is melted and introduced into a vessel lined with a refractory. Then when blowing oxygen on the surface thereof by using a lance, manganese is preferentially oxidized and evaporated and nearly all the iron remain in the vessel in a melted state. Also the temp. of melted manganese iron alloy is gradually resin by heat of oxidizing reaction and furthermore evaporation and oxidation are promoted. In this production (when metallic manganese is use as the raw material, all amounts of the melted raw material are oxidized and evaporated), manganese oxide can continuously be obtained by feeding oxygen or gas contg. oxygen without feeding thoroughly a heat source when manganese-contg. metal being in a melted state is firstly obtained.
