PURPOSE:To obtain titanium disulfide which is small in grain diameter and high purity and has Ti/S close to stoichiometric ratio by allowing titanium and sulfur to directly react in a vacuum sealed tube in the specified mixing molar ratio at the specified temp. CONSTITUTION:Metallic titanium and sulfur and mixed in inert gas so that Ti/S is regulated to 0.92/2-0.99/2 molar ratio. Then the mixture is vacuum- enclosed in a sealed tube and slowly raisen in temp. till 500-580 deg.C in such a state that the sealed tube is left to stand and reaction is performed for 30-100hr at this temp. After the reaction is finished, the sealed tube is cooled till the temp. close to ordinary temp. and dismounted in inert gas and a small amount of titanium trisulfide by-produced from the produced titanium disulfide is separated. When the above-mentioned Ti/S is larger than 0.92/2 molar ration, one part of titanium disulfide having the unspecified ratio plenty in Ti content is easily formed. Also when Ti/S is smaller than 0.92/2 molar ratio, the large amounts of titanium trisulfide are by-produced and yield is remarkably reduced.
