PURPOSE:To produce scaly calcium carbonate which is used in a cosmetic article, an extender pigment or filter for resin and excellent in transparency by treating a pearl layer separated from a seashell having the pearl layer with an alkali soln. CONSTITUTION:A seashell having a pearl layer (e.g. the seashell such as pearl oyster, pond pearl oyster, fresh-water mussel) is immersed in 5-60wt% alkali soln. (e.g. a sodium hydroxide aq. soln. or the like) and heated at 30-100 deg.C temp., if necessary, to separate the pearl layer. Then this pearl layer is treated by 5-60wt% alkali soln. and heated at 30-200 deg.C on this occasion and thereby the following scaly calcium carbonate powder is obtained which is approximately specified in the size of grain and also is scaly and excellent in transparency and therefore can be used as a cosmetic article, an extender pigment or a filler for resin.
