The invention relates to a control device for an air conditioning system of a motor vehicle with an evaporator (3) and heat exchanger (4), in particular a petrol cooler (4) with a petrol line (7), connected to the evaporator (3) on the outlet side. The flow of refrigerant is controlled by an expansion valve by way of a temperature sensor (5). According to the invention it is proposed to arrange the temperature sensor (5) downstream of the petrol cooler (4) rather than immediately downstream of the evaporator (3) (point 6). In this way it is ensured that sufficient refrigerating capacity is available on the petrol cooler (4) irrespective of the refrigerating capacity demand on the evaporator (3). At the same time the compressor is protected from excessively hot refrigerant vapours.
