In a process for roasting sinterable materials in which the raw materials in the form of coarse flour are preheated in a preheating stage, heating is effected in a calcination stage, heating in a roasting stage to convert them into a sintered material such as clinker, cooling this finally in a cooling stage, the invention provides for the clinker to have coarse flour added to it as a cooling agent during the cooling stage. The process can preferably be used to manufacture white Portland clinker cement. An installation for performing the process with a preheater for coarse flour whose output of material enters a calciner and is discharged into a roasting plant, whose output in turn passes to a cooling installation, is characterised in that the cooling installation (D) comprises a precooler 13 and a final cooler 14 which is spatially separated from the former and in that the precooler 13 has a device 15 for delivering a meterable feed of flour.
