<p>An input code in the form of a prediction error signal is applied to a terminal (1) connected to a variable length encoder (2) whose output is applied by way of a multiplexer (3) to a buffer memory (7). The contents of the memory are read out at constant rate to a transmission line (9). A decision making circuit (4) detects when the input code is zero and an AND gate (5) provides a selection signal to the multiplexer (3) when the input code is zero and a controller (8) indicates that the contents of the buffer memory (7) are below a predetermined level. In the presence of the selection signal the multiplexer (3) selects the output of a run length encoder (6), connected to the output of the AND gate (5) instead of the output of the variable length encoder (2). </p> |
