A portable collecting device for vapour phase pyrolysis comprises a base plate 28, Fig. 3, having an electric heating element 10 shaped at 11 to support the sample to the pyrolysed, a cover 23 having an infrared transparent window 20, hermetically sealed at 27 to the base 28, to form a vacuum cell 13, a connection 18 for removably connecting to a source of sub-atmospheric pressure, the connection 18 communicating with cell 13 via a valve, operated by a handle 17 and a conduit 25 in the base 28, and disengageable means 9 on the base plate 28 for engaging an electric power supply. The device may be plugged into a power supply having various voltage selectors and a timing mechanism so that the sample is heated to a predetermined temperature for a specified time. Then the device may be fitted into an infrared spectro-photometer.
