Phenol is monomethylated by contacting a gaseous mixture of phenol and methanol with a zeolite, as catalyst, at a temperature in the range 250-350‹ C. for 5-75 sees. Preferably, the catalyst is a synthetic zeolite. The products are cresols, mainly o-cresol, and small amounts of xylenols. |
