The appts. drills holes vertically into the soil for quarrying and mining operations etc. It has a fixed baseplate supported by anchorage bolts, and supporting a rotating plate (1) through which the drilling tube (4) passes. The rotating plate has a toothed pully underneath, forming part of a belt drive adjacent to the base plate. Carried by the rotating plate is a pair of friction rollers (11) which force the drilling tube into the ground as the plate rotates. - The two rollers rotate about axes (xx) at right angles to the axis of the tube and they can be adjusted towards or away from each other. The contact surfaces (12) of the rollers are concave, carrying friction ribs (15) and forming a circular opening for the tube, matching its diameter approximately.
