PURPOSE:To prevent an unstable arc due to an acoustic resonance phenome-non from being generated in a luminous tube by applying high-frequency lighting, in a frequency modulation method, to a high-pressure discharge lamp in which a distance from the tube end of a luminous tube to the electrode tip is limited to 16mm or more. CONSTITUTION:A high-pressure discharge lamp in which a distance L from the tube end of a luminous tube to the electrode tip is limited to 16mm or more is subjected to high-frequency lighting, in a frequency modulation method. Consequently, an acoustic resonance phenomenon can be evaded. And curvature, fluctuation, going out of an arc pillar and destruction of the luminous tube can be prevented for maintaining stable lighting.
