PURPOSE:To improve the picture quality by providing the 1st and 2nd row direction registers respectively at both ends of column direction registers, selecting two adjacent rows of photosensitive picture elements arranged in the direction of row and transferring the signal charge to the 1st and 2nd row direction registers respectively so as to stabilize clamping. CONSTITUTION:An address circuit 12 selects a photosensitive picture element 2 of, e.g., the (2i-1)-th line and the (2i)-th line during the horizontal scanning blanking period and the signal charge subject to photoelectric conversion is transferred to adjacent column direction CCD registers 3 independently. The a part between the (2i-1)-th line and the (2i)-th line is used as a boundary, clock pulses of opposite phase to each other are fed to the column direction CCD registers 3 by an address circuit 12 so as to transfer the signal charge of the photosensitive picture element 2 of the (2i-1)-th line into a storage electrode 7 and the signal charge of the photosensitive picture element 2 of the (2i)-th line into a storage electrode 4 respectively and they are stored therein. The charge is transferred to row direction CCD registers 9, 6 respec tively via transfer electrodes 8, 5 during the next horizontal scanning blanking period, the clock pulse is applied at the same time and an output is given from output terminals 11, 10 simultaneously.
