Appts. for aerobic purification of effluent water such as sewage water comprises an aeration unit (I) with means to supply (4, 5, 5') and discharge (RH side) the water passed through. Supply is effected by metering means (5, 18, 6) from an enclosed vessel (2) arranged upstream of the unit (claimed). These means preferably comprise a trough (18) with level sensor (-2) controlling a feed pump (5) and a rotating bucket (20) wheel (6; 19, 20) to transfer trough contents to the unit (1). This unit preferably consists of one or more drums (8; 9-11) which are driven to rotate whilst partly submerged in a further trough (16) and contain elements such as rings to maximise the water surface contact area.
