The emulsions, for use in prodn. of paints and lacquers, are made by polymerisation of one or more olefinic-unsatd. monomers in aq. emulsion in presence of a suitable catalyst system and one or more emulsifiers. Reaction is at 0-90 deg.C under atmos. pressure or above, and monomers addn. time is 1-10 hours, and is carried out in presence of a mixt. of phosphate esters obtd. by (a) reaction of the hydroxylic cpd. A-BOH with P2O5 in molar ratio 3:1 to 1:1, at below 60 deg.C; and (b) reaction of the prod. with the hydroxylic cpd. TOH at 20-80 deg.C under atmos. pressure.
