Apparatus 10 for edge folding a flexible workpiece, e.g. a footwear upper 15, comprises a device for making cuts or indentations including a blade 44 and a counterblade 41, drive means for operating the cutting device and control means operable independently of the drive means for controlling cutting operations on the workpiece. The upper 15 slides on a table 14 and its outer edge to be folded runs on a fixed member 16 having an upper surface curved to effect the subsequent edge folding. A presser foot 18 is fixed to a lever 20 pivoted at 21 and connected by a pin and slot connection 23, 24 to a lever 26 pivoted at 27. The other end 28 of the lever 26 is vertically reciprocable, e.g. by a pedal-actuated vertical rod, in a fixed slot 29. A lever 30 pivoted at 31 has a pin 35 adjustably positioned in an abutment 33 thereon. The pin 35 is slidable through a bore 37 in a fixed part 38 of the apparatus and the free end can engage the lever 20. The lever 30 is held against a projection 39 of the part 38 by a spring 73. The counterblade 41 is secured by a pin 42 in a slot 40 in the lever 30 so as to be adjustable towards and away from the presser foot 18. The blade 44 is U-shaped, one prong of the U having a cutting edge 45 and the other prong 46 having a slot 47, and is fixed to the counterblade 41 by a screw 43. The blade 44 and the oounterblade 41 are urged towards each other by a spring (49), Fig. 4 (not shown). The slot 47 is engaged by a pin 50 on a bar 51 fixed to a rod 52 having an enlarged diameter portion 54 having a roller 55 projecting downwardly therefrom and an abutting inclined plane 56 against which a frusto-conical end 57 of a rod 58 is urged by a spring 65. The rod 58 is vertically reciprocable in a fixed sleeve 59 and is pivoted to a rod 61 connected to a box 63 which allows a restricted reciprocation only. The rod 61 is connected to a rod 64 linked to a pedal (not shown). The rod 52 is urged to the left of Fig. 1 by a spring 72 so that when the end 57 is clear of its seating 56, the roller 55 is pressed against a cam 67 keyed to the mainshaft 12 of the machine. In operation, to cut or indent the edge of the upper 15 being folded, the pedal connected to the bar 58 is depressed and the roller 55 follows the cam 67 so that the bar 52 reciprocates the blade 44 through the pin and slot connection 50, 47, the cutting movement of the blade taking place in the same direction as the direction of folding of the edge of the workpiece. Due to the action of the lever 20 on the pin 35 the blade and counterblade assembly are lifted from the upper 15 when the presser foot 18 is lifted and when the foot 18 is lowered this assembly is positioned at a height determined by the projection 39.</p> |
