PURPOSE:To improve the beam focusing characteristic and enable the reproduction of high-resolution images by reducing the width of vertical scanning electrodes to at most 1/2 of their pitch. CONSTITUTION:Predetermined voltages are applied to linear cathodes 10, vertical scanning electrodes 11a-11c, and G1 and G2 electrodes 13 and 14, respectively. An OFF voltage which is the same as the voltage of the electrodes 11a and 11c is always applied to beam-focusing auxiliary electrodes 12. As the result, the high electric potential is suppressed and the area of electronic emission is shortened, thereby improving the vertical focusing. Although a beam-focusing auxiliary electrode 12 is installed between vertical scanning electrodes 11, even without the electrodes 12, the effect can also be expected by taking the width of the electrodes 11 to be reduced to at most 1/2 of the pitch. The vertical focusing can also be improved by protruding the electrodes 12 towards the linear cathode 10, or fibers coated with a conductive substance between the electrodes 11 instead of the electrodes 12.
