PURPOSE:To grasp the outlines of plural pictures by storing the video signal data of an inputted first-size picture in one of the paired storing means, and sampling the stored data partially to generate the video signal data of a second- size picture, and storing the resulting data in the other of the paired storing means. CONSTITUTION:The video signal read out from a magnetic disc 10 by a magnetic disc reading part 12 is written in the frame memory 1 100 of a storing means 26. The means 26 and a storage control part 34 sample the color picture element signals of a one-field picture 200 one from every five picture elements, generate the data of a summazised picture 202 up to maximum quantity for all the frames, array them in order in an index picture 204, and store them in a frame memory 2 100 through a shift register 102. When the reading from the memory 2 is commanded by operating an operation part 38, the video signal data in the index picture 204 is read out by the part 34, and converted to an analog signal by a D/A converter 32 and outputted. As a result, the outline of the contents of originals pictures can be confirmed visually.
