A device for controlling the flow of breathable gas during inhaling and exhaling in a breathing apparatus (as illustrated with reference to the drawing) comprises a container 2, 4, a flexible diaphragm 6 dividing the container into a first chamber subject to ambient pressure (via holes 3, 5) and a second chamber 18 which is subject in turn to the pressures of exhaled gas (from pipe 34 via an orifice in the chamber) and of breathable gas mixture, a first valve means (piston 54, cylinder 64 and ring 62) being actuable by the diaphragm (via linkage 70, 71, 72) to control escape of exhaled gases (via 30) and being opened when the pressure in the second chamber is higher than that of the ambient medium in the first chamber, and a second valve means (piston 52, cylinder 64 and ring 62) similarly actuable by the diaphragm to expand and supply breathable gas (from 16) during inhaling, the movable parts of the first and second valve means being rigidly interconnected (by rod 56) in such manner that displacement of the diaphragm in one direction opens one valve means and closes the other and vice versa, whereby in use there is successively established in the second chamber a pressure equal to that of the exhaled gases and then to that of the breathable gas mixture after expansion by the second valve means. |
