9alpha-chloro H beta-hydroxy 16 beta-methyl 1,4-pregna-diene 3,20-dione 17-propionate 21-(2-hydroxy benzoate) of formula (I), for treatment of allergic and phlogistic dermatitis is made by (a) reaction of a cpd. of formula (II) with an equimolar amount of the trimethyl ortho-ester of propanoic acid, in benzene/dioxane medium, in presence of pyridine p-toluene sulphonate under reflux; (b) hydrolysis of the prod. with acetate buffer at pH 3.9-4.0 under reflux; (c) reaction with acetyl salicyl chloride in hexane/pyridine at 0 deg.C; and (d) treatment of the aq. alcoholic soln. with HCl.
