A method of the type in which gasoline is recovered from a mixture of gasoline vapour and air by absorbing the gasoline in a cooled petroleum distillate is described in which a petroleum distillate having a boiling point range above that of gasoline is used and the petroleum distillate is then cooled by exchanging heat with a cold sink, placing the gasoline/air mixture in direct contact for absorption of the gasoline, transfer to an intermediate tank and transfer from the intermediate tank to a separation device which may comprise a distillation column. By combining condensation by cooling and absorption of the gasoline vapour and by controlling the quantity of cooled petroleum distillate placed in contact with the gasoline/air mixture so that the gasoline concentration in the petroleum distillate transferred to the intermediate tank is substantially constant it is possible to achieve optimum control, which has hitherto been impossible to achieve, of the process of absorbing the gasoline in operations performed under conditions of both maximum load and medium load. The system or installation for putting the method into practice is advantageous because only the absorption device 2 has to be dimensioned for operation under maximum load conditions, while the other components such as for example the distillation column 5 or heat exchanger 4 and their associated pipework can be dimensioned for operation under medium load conditions, an intermediate tank 3 being provided for the temporary receipt of petroleum distillate, which as a result of the control mentioned above 15, 16 has a substantially constant gasoline concentration with the result that the system or installation can satisfy maximum loads with a surprisingly small intermediate tank 3.
|
