PURPOSE:To surely read a bar code even if a read face is inclined somewhat, by arranging a light source so that a medium on which the bar code is printed is irradiated at an acute angle from the rear to the front and arranging a light receiving part at the rear of the light source. CONSTITUTION:In an enclosure 20, a light source 23 is arranged at about 60 deg. to the surface of a medium 22 so that the upper face of the medium 22 on which the bar code is printed is irradiated at an acute angle from the rear to the front when a read face 21 is set in parallel with the medium 22, and a reflective mirror 24 constituting the light receiving part is arranged at about 30 deg. at the rear of the light source 23. The light is projected from the light source 23 to the medium 22, and the reflected light is made incident on a line sensor 26 through the reflective mirror 24 and a lens system 25 to read the bar code. Even if the enclosure 20 falls to the side of a user to incline the read face 21 to this side with respect to the surface of the medium 22, the angle of incidence on the medium 22 from the light source 23 and the angle of reflection from the medium 22 to the reflecting mirror 24 do not coincide with each other, and specular reflection does not occur.
