Articles are transferred between a roller conveyer 42 and a vertically moving conveyer 40 by means of an apparatus comprising a plurality of endless conveyer belts 19 arranged in a horizontal plane on each side of a base member 10 and driven by a common drive shaft 16 mounted on said member 10 wherein the conveyers 19 on one side of the base member are in interleaved relation with the conveyers on the other side. The idler pulleys 18 for the conveyers 19 at opposite ends of the apparatus are each mounted by a pair of plates 12 extending parallel to the respective conveyer, which plates are attached to the base member and are integral with the corresponding one on the opposite side of the base member. The base member is mounted on a framework 43, 46, 49 wherein by means of hydraulic jacks 51, 50 the apparatus may respectively be moved horizontally between positions adjacent the two conveyers 40, 42 and vertically. To transfer articles to or from an upwardly or downwardly respectively moving conveyer 40 the apparatus is arranged in a position whereby the fingers of the platform 41 of the conveyer 40 pass between the conveyers 19 and deposit or remove articles thereon. To load a downwardly moving platform the apparatus is raised and when the platform 41 is just below the conveyers 19 the apparatus is moved towards the conveyer 40 and then lowered at a rate greater than that of the platform to deposit the article thereon before being withdrawn. To remove an article from an upwardly moving conveyer the above method is reversed. Articles are held on the roller conveyer 42 by means of a stop (52), Fig. 5 (not shown) when the apparatus is adjacent the conveyer 40. The stop comprises a bell crank, one arm (53) of which is spring urged into the path of the articles and the other arm (55) is engageable by the apparatus when adjacent the roller conveyer to overcome the spring (57) and permit the discharge of the articles. |
