1,153,907. Continuous casting. AMERICAN SMELTING & REFINING CO. 3 Oct., 1966 [11 Oct., 1965], No. 44139/66. Heading B3F. [Also in Division C7] A holding furnace 1 for a copper base alloy (see Division C7) to be continuously cast in a graphite mould 9, 10 is charged from a melting furnace 25 through a pour box 26 containing a master alloy. The mould may be horizontal or inclined and contain a mandrel (33). A starter bar used with the vertical mould shown has a threaded tip. Nitrogen is introduced into the holder 1 through a pipe 29 in a cover-plate 27. The cast strand 4 may be withdrawn at constant or variable speed or intermittently (cycle times and speeds are quoted) and the intermittent withdrawal may be obtained by mould reciprocation. A switch 14 may operate the withdrawal roll motor 12 intermittently and a brake 15 may be operated manually or automatically by a timer. Pb-rich exudations like pimples are produced on the casting by the interrupted withdrawal but are flattened or smeared if the casting is passed through a roll straightener. |
