1,154,019. Red stained soda lime glass. CORNING GLASS WORKS. 1 Sept., 1966 [10 Sept., 1965], No. 39133/66. Heading C1M. A method of copper staining the surface of glass to produce a red coloured article, comprising applying to the surface a copper containing staining composition, heating the glass in a mild reducing atmosphere to a temperature sufficient to ion exchange copper ions for sodium ions in a thin layer at the surface of the glass, heating the glass in a hydrogen containing atmosphere until the copper ions are substantially reduced to metallic copper and firing the glass at a temperature sufficient to develop a red colour in the glass. The mild reducing atmosphere contains sulphur dioxide and the said staining composition is an aqueous slurry containing a copper oxide, sulphide, sulphate, or chloride. The slurry may additionally contain a trace amount of a silver compound calculated in parts by weight as in the range of 0À1-0À6 parts of silver ions to 100 parts of copper ions. Silver compounds mentioned are the sulphide, sulphate, oxide and nitrate. |
