PURPOSE:To obtain a thermoplastic aromatic polyether aromatic polyketone useful in the field of molding materials which must have particularly high heat resistance, comprising 4 specified recurring units and having a specified intrinsic viscosity. CONSTITUTION:A polymer comprising recurring units of the formula and having an intrinsic viscosity [eta]int. >=0.7. this thermoplastic aromatic polyeter aromatic polyketone can be obtained by polycondensing 4,4'-dihydroxydiphenyl with a 4,4'-dihalogenobenzophneone in the presence of an aromatic sulfone solvent. The polycondensation temperature is 150-450 deg.C, but it is preferable that the temperature is increased from a lower temperature to the final temperature of about 380 deg.C continuously or stepwise. As said aromatic sulfone, diphenyl sulfone is desirable.
