Phenylsulfonamides of the formula <IMAGE> in which X is a group <IMAGE> Y is hydrogen, halogen, C1-C5-alkyl, trifluoromethyl, C2-C5-alkenyl, C2-C5-alkynyl, nitro, -COOR6 or -Q-R6, A is oxygen, sulfur, a direct bond, C1-C5-alkylene, C2-C5-alkenylene, C1-C5-halogenoalkylene or -NR7-(CH2)m-; -CH2-NH-(CH2)m; -(CH2)m-NR7- or -O-(CH2)p-, -S-(CH2)p-, -(CH2)p-O- or -(CH2)p-S-, n is zero or one, G is oxygen or sulfur, R4 is C1-C5-alkoxy, C1-C5-halogenoalkoxy, C1-C5-alkylthio, C1-C5-alkyl, C1-C5-halogenoalkyl, phenyl or hydroxyl, R5 is hydrogen, C1-C5-alkoxy, C1-C5-halogenoalkoxy, C1-C5-alkylthio, C1-C 5-alkyl or hydroxyl, R6 is hydrogen, C1-C5-alkyl, C1-C5-halogenoalkyl or C2-C6-alkoxyalkyl, Q is oxygen, sulfur, -SO- or -SO2-, R7 is hydrogen, C1-C5-alkyl, phenyl, benzyl or phenyl which is substituted by C1-C5-alkyl, halogen, or nitro, m is a number from zero to three, p is a number from zero to two and r is one or two are useful as intermediates for phosphorous-containing N-phenylsulfonyl-N'-pyrimdinylurea and N-phenylsulfonyl-N'-triazinylurea herbicides.
