PURPOSE:To record surely data in a dropoutless track by erasing an artificial signal recorded in an unrecorded track when there is no dropout. CONSTITUTION:When no recording of a signal such as image information on the track of a rotary magnetic recording medium is decided, the artificial signal outputted from a signal generating circuit 130 is recorded on the track concerned through a gate circuit 102 and a head 62. Then, a control circuit 70 decides the existence of dropout on the track concerned based on the detecting output of an envelope detecting circuit 86. When the generation of dropout on the track concerned is decided, the artificial signal is held at the recorded status, and when no generation of dropout is decided, the recorded artificial signal is erased.
