Personnel are protected from being injured through contacting a rotating splined power take-off stub shaft 18, Fig. 3, by means of a cap 30 which is rotatably mounted on the shaft 18 by balls 36 engaging a groove 22 in the shaft 18. The cap includes an outer rubber jacket 38 which maintains the balls 36 in contact with the groove 22. Drain holes 32 are provided in the end of the cap 30. A short length of rubber tubing 28 may be provided between the cap 30 and a housing 14. In a modification, the cap 30 is replaced by a sleeve 300, Fig. 5, extending beyond the end 180 of the stub shaft. In another modification, relatively rotatable inner and outer concentric sleeves 64, 66, Fig. 6, are spaced apart by nylon rings 68. Balls 78 are retained in openings 76 in the inner sleeve 64 by an elastomeric member 80. In a further modification, balls are replaced by dogs 37, Fig. 8, which are locked in position by a spring-pressed collar. Also the balls may be replaced by a wire spring 360, Fig. 11 having arcuately offset portions 37. In another embodiment, Fig. 9 an elastomeric synthetic resin sleeve 82 has internally formed bosses 84 adapted to releasably engage a stub shaft. The cap or sleeve may be tethered to a tractor adjacent a power take-off shaft by means of a light chain or cord. Alternatively an upwardly projecting peg may be provided on the tractor for storage of the cap or sleeve when not in use. |
