PURPOSE:To reduce the quantity of noise generated in a reproduced output by using a single gap head as a magnetic head when data are to be recorded and reproduced by sliding the magnetic head on a rotary magnetic recording medium having <=63.5 tracks/inch track pitch, and regulating track width to a specific value. CONSTITUTION:Data are recorded and reproduced by sliding the magnetic head on the magnetic recording medium having <=63.5 tracks/inch track pitch as follows. Namely, the single gap head including all functions for data writing, reading and reproducing is used as the head and the track width is specified so as to be the same value as the track pitch or a range of +0 and -50mum. In said constitution, an unerased part is not simultaneously reproduced at the reproducing of a required track, so that the level of significance for the generation of data errors is reduced.
