Coatings of an acrylamide polymer are formed on metal substrates, e.g. of steel (alloy), Pt, Cd, Sn, Pb, V, Cr, Ti, W, Au, Bi, Ni, Al, Fe, Cu or Zn, by immersing at least two such substrates as electrodes in an aqueous solution of a monomeric N-3-oxohydrocarbonsubstituted acrylamide having the formula: (wherein R and R 1 are each independently H or a C 1-1o alkyl group and R 2 is an ethylene radical which may be substituted by at least one C 1-10 alkyl group), maintaining the pH of the solution at 1-6, e.g. by adding H 2 SO 4 , HN0 3 or HC1, and applying an alternating potential of 1 to 150 volts between the electrodes. The preferred monomer is diacetone acrylamide. The solution may contain 0.01-1% by weight of soluble hydroperoxide e.g. H 2 O 2 or t-butyl hydroperoxide. An ethylenically unsaturated monomer, e.g. n<SP>1</SP>n-methylenebisacrylamide may be present in the solution up to 10% by weight of the N-3-oxohydrocarbon-substituted acrylamide monomer. The electrodes may be of the same or different metals. Any salt, acid or base may be used as electrolyte, e.g. (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 and Fe 2 (SO 4 ) 3 . Argon may be bubbled through the solution to maintain an inert atmosphere. Specification No. 1,134, 387 is referred to.
